Woven Network (2021 - 2022): Creative synergies between artisan weavers and designers.
Woven Network is an initiative aimed at connecting passionate designers and textile artisans.
A key collaborator, Color Silk, is a Cambodian social enterprise that empowers women to contribute to economic development in isolated areas of the country. It teaches them hand-weaving skills, and provide them with safe and permanent jobs.
Color Silk was introduced to Singapore-based designers to explore new avenues for artistic expression. The project began with a workshop conducted by Loy, to introduce possibilities and limitations of hand-weaving, as well as methods in visualising woven designs.
The designers proposed drawings to the weavers, who interpreted them with their own techniques. The result is an amalgamation of contemporary visions and artisanal intuition.
A showcase of the first iteration of designs was held during Singapore Design Week 2022, at National Design Centre, and later, at library@orchard in 2023.
