	Lines placed, not drawn

When working with weaving as a technique for building material, all lines are placed rather than drawn.&#38;nbsp;
The line, an existing material, has its physical form manipulated as it is woven into a suface. Held at high tension, the line is straight; at low tension, it curves or zig-zags as it is pulled by other lines in the network.
The amount of its surface area made visible in any given space results in the final colour rendered. Colour Tension and Volatile Impressions are two series of woven works exploring this push-pull relationship between tension in material and colours rendered.

	The tie-dyeing technique employed in all Plied Colour pieces is an adaptation of the resist-dyeing process in kasuri, also known as Japanese ikat. Each colour is dyed separately. Sections not to be dyed are bound extremely tightly to prevent colouration.After dyeing, the yarns are plied together into a solid column of lines, showing the extreme contrast between pure colour and an optical mix of red and blue.The ends are bound using the same ikat-binding technique used to create the resist – a reference to the key process.

	Each Lexeme was created with a combination of colour transition in mind. These colour transitions often result in a change in visual resolution, scattering a single colour and optically mixing it with another. While certain pairs of colours optically mix more harmoniously, others render a visual noise of competeing hues.

	Space within lines: depth explorations

Depth Explorations are an on-going study in three-dimensionality of woven textiles, and their capacity to ‘hold’ pockets of space.
 
The textile’s third dimension which is depth (z), occurs as a by-product of interlacing lines on two axes – horizontal and vertical (x, y). It is impossible to control the magnitude of this z-variable directly, but only through manipulation of the x-y relationship.The pursuit of this elusive depth is the motivation for these studies.

Depth Exploration: Fluid Spaces 02, 2025


An exercise in augmentation of the classic waffle weave structure employed in the Depth Exploration series, Depth Exploration: Fluid Spaces 02 visually deviates from the grid. Shifting peaks and valleys result in varying physical depth in material, overlaying thread colours with gradations of shadows in multiple angles.

	The Weaverly Way II, 2021 has been acquired by Singapore Art Museum in 2025.

	The Weaverly Way, 2020
This site-specific installation employs a weaver's approach to conceptualising and building sculpture. Its exaggerated relief reveals the often hidden depth within woven materials. Structured yet pliable, the gently twisting column stands at the center of a spiral staircase at citizenM Bankside. The piece was produced in collaboration with British heritage silk mill Gainsborough Weaving, and presented at London Craft Week 2020.Supported by DesignSingapore Council.Hosted by citizenM Bankside.

	Traversing Splines 1-4, 2026Commissioned by Singapore Land Tower
The site-specific artwork is a series of 4 fluid forms that respond to the linearity of the space with their elongated proportions that flow along a curved corridor. A progressing colour gradation echoes local tropical flora and its layered textures.
Building upon Depth Exploration studies, the handwoven work presents three-dimensional potential and fluidity of woven material, as well as fine optical colour-mixing in threads. Observed from different positions, the material shifts in colour intensity and form.


	Natural Colour, 2023For The Macallan House at Raffles Hotel Singapore

A technical exploration of the waffle weave structure, that breaks out of the standard grid. The introduction of irregularity in repeats bring softer curves and rhythm.
The site-specific textile art installation was created for The Macallan House, in response to the curved copper walls of the interior space, designed by Jamie Fobert Architects. The colours reflect the natural colours of The Macallan’s whiskys, which are a result of their seasoned oak casks.

	Interlaced lines make up a structure.
Structure is made visible by colour.
Colour and structure are fundamental parameters in weaving; each can shift our perception of the other in surprising ways.
Through observations of interactions between line and colour, the mechanics of seeing are unpacked.
How does our perception of colour shift when it takes the form of a fine line?
How is our understanding of a form challenged when its colours are altered?
These questions, expressed in visual form with minute details invite viewers to indulge in the very act of observing.&#38;nbsp;

	Plied Colour
Development of fibre-based sculpturesThe weaver’s approach to building with colour is similar to that a Pointillist’s, except in a 3D context.
 Just as the use of colour can suggest depth in a 2D painting, so can it suggest construct in a 3D object. In fact, it can manipulate our perception of construct.
 This pair of sculptures express the delicate relationship between colour and structure in the form of thick lines, built from finer lines.
The pieces were produced during an artist residency in 2021 at The Straits Clan, organised by The Artling.

	Structural Gradient
Creating colour gradients by manipulation of structureThis series presents the level of complexity that can be achieved in yarn-twisting, by adopting principles of weaving (building surface from lines), to yarn-twisting (building thick line from finer lines). The colour gradients were achieved, not by using different coloured yarns on both ends, but by gradually changing the yarn structure, showing more of some colours, while hiding others. This is similar to weaving – when more weft than warp is exposed, the weft colour dominates.
The work documents a search for possibilities in applying weaver’s skills, building forms with pliable lines, which are beyond the rectangular grid.

		<description>Observing TENSION

	
Play on Tension, (2021)&#38;nbsp;is a project commissioned by Pico Art, and a collaboration with music composer Tze Toh. The series of short videos with accompanying music present micro movements in intertwining threads when the tension in them is released.
It is natural to think of stitches as the threads that hold fabrics together, but the fabric is just as much an important element that holds the stitches in place. When the fabric disappears, stitches lose the tension that holds them in place; they come apart too.

	LINES in SPACE
An exploration of the relationship 
between line and space, and our visceral experience of the two. How 
does a line change the way we feel and see space? The minimal material nudges the thresholds of our senses – lines at the threshold of 
visibility, and woven textiles at the threshold of ‘surface’.
In a 2023 solo show at Art Outreach, these thoughts are expressed in the form of a floor-to-ceiling installation of lines, as well as process pieces that led to it.

	The act of weaving – constructing surfaces from lines held in tension, is a constant negotiation between weaver and line. Especially in the context of extremely open weave structures, the lines find their own equilibrium within the woven structure, after the weaver’s intervention.
 The technical challenge of keeping the structures strong and stable while loosely woven was a source of motivation for the central installation.

Weaving involves filling a space with lines, interlaced to from a surface.
This line-surface-space relationship shifts when the gaps between the lines (within the surface) are expanded to a point where the surface disappears.&#38;nbsp;
In this state, the space becomes a volume that has been subdivided by a network of lines.

	Expanding the potential of embroidery techniques in creating 3-dimensional forms.

	Tiffany Loy (b. 1987) is a Singaporean artist and educator trained in industrial design in Singapore, and textile-weaving in Kyoto. She graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Textiles, and was a recipient of the DesignSingapore Scholarship.
Loy’s weaverly and investigative approach uses the thinness of threads in optical colour mixing, resulting in a high visual resolution of complex colour interactions and textures. Her sculptural woven pieces stretch the 3-dimensionality and fluidity that is inherent in woven structures.

 Referring to her medium as the pliable line rather than fibre, Loy is interested in expanding the potential of the thread as an abstract medium, free from utilitarian and cultural associations.

Minuscule details in her work compel viewers to exercise their eyes, and indulge in the pure act of observing.
